Indian-born Paul, 78, has seen his wealth drop 67% in the past year. He founded the Caparo car components-to-metals group, which shed 500 jobs last year. It expects sales in 2008 of about £850m, with profits of about £40m. Paul’s three sons run the family operations while their father concentrates on politics in the House of Lords. Caparo is worth about £400m on its 2008 figures. We add £100m for Indian assets including hotels and restaurants.

MSc in Mechanical Engineering – Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Awarded the Padma Bhushan (Indian equivalent to British Peerage) by the Government of India in 1983. Elevated to the British Peerage in 1996.
Lord Paul's roots go back to the little Punjab town of Jalandhar in India where, in 1910, his father started by making steel buckets, tubs, trunks and agricultural implements, and had a small foundry at the back of the family home. From this modest undertaking Apeejay Surrendra Group has grown into one of India's largest family owned industrial groups in a wide range of industries : steel, engineering, pharmaceuticals, hotels, shipping and tea.
Lord Paul and his brothers grew up surrounded by their father's small business and succeeded him in its diversification and expansion. From his father, Lord Paul and his brothers learnt three important business lessons: integrity, hard work and the value of close family ties.
Though the business prospered, the family continued to live frugally, following the Hindu prescription "simple living and high thinking". Anecdotes recall that when Lord Paul's mother was asked why she wore no jewels, she would proudly declare: "my sons are my jewels." This ethic of close family ties continued and Lord Paul attributes much of his business success to the moral and emotional support he received from his three brothers - Stya, Jit and Surrendra, and the happy home life created by his wife, Aruna.
Lord Paul came to Britain in 1966 for medical treatment for his daughter, Ambika. He remained in England after her tragic death in 1968 and sees all he has created in Caparo Group as a dedication to her memory. In 1994 Lord Paul took the opportunity to commemorate the rebuilding of London's Children's Zoo in her name. Whilst receiving treatment in London, the Zoo became Ambika’s favourite destination.

London, August 25: Leading NRI industrialist Lord Swraj Paul is set to be a key player in influencing who will win the next general elections in the UK, a leading daily said on Saturday.

"Today Lord Paul is named in the Sunday Times rich list as the 36th wealthiest man in Britain, has spent more than a decade in the House of Lords, is a close friend of Brown and his wife, and is set to be a key player in influencing who will win the next election," The Times stated.

Last month, at a private party held at London Zoo to honour Ambika, Lord Paul's daughter who died of leukaemia at the age of four, he told Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah that he was dedicating a new bridge in the zoo's African bird park to the memory of their late daughter, Jennifer.
"Then, last week, the 76-year-old peer suddenly declared that he would pay ‘as much as I can afford’ to enable the cash-strapped Labour Party to win the next election, fuelling talk of a snap autumn poll."

Lord Paul hosts wedding party to outdo Versailles spectacular - Swaraj Paul
By Amit Roy - telegraph.co.uk

Lord Paul, the Indian-born Labour peer and chairman of the Caparo steel company, has invited a who's who of the British political establishment to a party at Lancaster House on Monday to celebrate the wedding of his youngest son, Angad, to Michelle Bonn, a media lawyer.
A £30 million wedding given by Lakshmi Mittal, another Indian-born steel tycoon, for his daughter, Vanisha, in Versailles, was one of the major social events of 2004 and Lord Paul's reception is expected to be equally lavish.
Invitation cards bearing the Paul crest, with its motto of "Truth, Freedom and Compassion", have been sent to 1,600 "friends".
Mittal, 55, an Indian passport holder, still remains plain "Mr Mittal", seeking whatever consolation he can from being named the third richest man on the planet (behind Bill Gates and William Busset) with assets of $25 billion.
But for all his wealth, power and connections would he have been able to get Lancaster House for a wedding reception?
At his Caparo HQ in Baker Street, Lord Paul, 74, flicks through a colour brochure showing Lancaster House in all its glory.
It pleases him that when Queen Victoria dropped in to have dinner with the Duchess of Sutherland, Her Majesty remarked: "I have come from my house [Buckingham Palace] to your palace."
Lord Paul says, in an exclusive interview: "I wanted an unusual place. It is not often Lancaster House is given to anybody, rather it is not given to anybody. It is a government hospitality place, for government banquets. They were kind enough to let me have it.'' Since Swraj Paul arrived from India in 1966 and certainly since he became Lord Paul of Marylebone in 1996, he has made a lot of friends. Cabinet ministers left off his guest list are likely to feel aggrieved.
"There are people from the Lords, MPs, opposition, business," he says.
And, oh, yes, "there will be a substantial number of people from the government," he adds. In the past, Cherie Blair has attended Lord Paul's functions, and so have "Gordon and Sarah" [Mr and Mrs Gordon Brown].
Also when "Robin" [Cook] was Foreign Secretary, he worked closely with Lord Paul who has just stepped down as the chairman of the Indo-British Round Table, an organisation which promotes high level contacts between London and Delhi.
Lord Paul will give his welcoming address at the reception, celebrating his 37-year-old son's wedding, the success of his company and the general good health of Indo-British relations.
What will not be on the menu on Monday is chicken tikka masala. In fact, there will be no curry.
Lord Paul, who has been a vegetarian all his life, has recruited Anton Mossiman to oversee the food. The party also celebrates the birthday of his wife, Aruna.
The Pauls will also be presenting their children and their children's children to Britain's ruling establishment. Lord Paul's sons, twins Ambar and Akash, 47, and Angad - all went to Harrow - are already established at Caparo, which employs 4,500 people, 60 per cent of them in Britain - "we are a very British company".
Also present will be his daughters-in-law, his daughter, Anjali, 45, her husband, and the Pauls' six grandchildren. "This is not a Swraj Paul show," insists Lord Paul. "It's really Swraj Paul saying that the next generation is kicking.''

LONDON: Leading NRI industrialist Lord Swraj Paul has been honoured with the 'Lifetime Achievement Award' by a UK-based business association for his outstanding contribution to the industry, education and philanthropy.
Lord Paul's daughter Anjali received the award at the Black Country Asian Business Association's annual awards dinner last night at Wednesbury in West Midlands as he was on a business trip to the US.
In his acceptance speech read out by Anjli, Lord Paul, founder Chairman of the Caparo Group, recalled his ties to the Black Country when Caparo first began operations in the West Midlands under the banner of a small company called L K Industrial.
"We changed the name to Caparo Industries and began to acquire more West Midlands manufacturing sites. Caparo now produces a range of steel based industrial and engineering products on 23 sites in the area."
He noted that since 1999 he has had the honour of being Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton which last year celebrated 21 years of University status.
"The University began life 190 years ago as the Wolverhampton Mechanics' Institute and laid the foundations of the University's mission and values today - which is to provide the opportunity for quality education to all who want to study with us."
Philanthropist and Labour politician, Lord Paul is also the chancellor of the University of Westminster.
He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1983.
"I believe we can truly say that the University of Wolverhampton is the University of Opportunity. With over 22,000 students from 150 countries, the University is one of the largest higher education providers in Britain and makes a significant contribution to the academic and economic life of the Black Country and surrounding regions," Lord Paul said.
He noted that he has always been keen to link industry to learning and The Caparo Innovation Centre makes that connection. It was established at the beginning of 2003 in collaboration with the University of Wolverhampton.
Based in the creative environment of the university's science park, the Centre is staffed by a team of product and business development professional covering the critical range of engineering marketing, design and business skills.
"It is an imaginative approach to turn product ideas into business realities," he added.
