Ninad Gangadhar Bedekar (17 August 1949 – 10 May 2015) was a historian,[1] writer and orator[2] from PuneMaharashtraIndia, writing and speaking in Marathi. He was a prolific contributor to newspapers and magazines. He scripted the Son et lumière show at Shanivarwada, and wrote the script for Marathi TV serial Peshwai. He was acquainted with Persian and Arabic, as well as the Modi script. He was a life member ofBharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal, Pune and an honorary member of Fort Renovation and Beautification Committee for the Government of Maharashtra.[3] He holds a diploma in mechanical engineering,[4] and has worked for Kirloskar Cummins Ltd., (now Cummins India Limited).[5] Bedekar traced his ancestry to the Rastes, a Maratha feudal family.[5] In 2003, Bedekar succeeded, along with the Maratha-Hindu-nationalist organization, Shiv Sena, in having James Laine's academic monograph, Shivaji: Hindu king in Islamic India (Oxford University Press) banned in their state, until India's Supreme court lifted the ban, but not beforeSambhaji Brigade [6] volunteers had ransacked the collections of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Poona where Laine had worked.[7]

He wrote the foreword[8] to the critically acclaimed book[9] Solstice at Panipat.

Research on forts[edit]

Bedekar is known for his research on the forts of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and about 75 forts outside India, having led numerous treks to them. He was an honorary member of Fort Renovation and Beautification Committee for the Government of Maharashtra and life member of Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal, Shri Shivaji Raigad Smarak Mandal - Pune, Shri Shivaji Raigad Smarak Mandal – (Chairman) Maharastra Kalopasak, Pune – (Chairman).

Tour de Sahyadri[edit]

To celebrate his 61st birth day, Bedekar took trekkers on a series of treks to 61 forts of Maharashtra, in the various districts of Maharashtra, starting on 17 August 2009 with the birthplace of Shivaji Fort Shivneri and ending on 1 Sept 2010 at Fort Raigad.[3]
