कै. विष्णु सखाराम तथा भाऊसाहेब खांडेकर यांच्या एकूण साहित्यकृतींच्या रत्नमाळेतील 'ययाति'चे स्थान मेरुमण्यासारखे आहे.
या कादंबरीचा पुराणाशी केवळ नावापुरता संबंध नाही. एका प्रसिद्ध पौराणिक उपाख्यानाचे धागेदोरे घेऊन ते त्यांनी या कादंबरीत स्वतंत्र रीतीने गुंफले आहेत. आपल्या प्रतिभेची जात, तिची शक्ती आणि तिच्या मर्यादा यांची योग्य जाणीव झालेल्या खांडेकरांनी आत्माविष्काराला योग्य अशीच कथा निवडली. ती ज्या माध्यमातून त्यांना प्रगट व्हावीशी वाटली, त्याच्यावर त्यांचे प्रभुत्व होतेच. पुराणकथांत जे भव्य-भीषण संघर्ष आढळतात, त्यांचे मंथन करण्याची अंगभूत शक्तीही त्यांच्या चिंतनात होती. जीवन जसे एका दृष्टीने क्षणभंगुर आहे, तसेच ते दुसर्‍या दृष्टीने चिरंतन आहे; ते जितके भौतिक आहे, तितकेच आत्मिक आहे, या कठोर सत्याचे आकलनही त्यांना पूर्णत्वाने झालेले होते. त्यामुळेच एका पौराणिक कथेच्या आधाराने एक सर्वोत्तम ललितकृती कशी निर्माण करता येते, याचा आदर्श वस्तुपाठच 'ययाति'च्या रूपाने श्री. खांडेकरांनी वाचकांपुढे ठेवला आहे.
कामुक, लंपट, सप्नातही ज्याला संयम ठाऊक नाही, असा ययाति; अहंकारी, महत्त्वाकांक्षी; मनात दंश धरणारी आणि प्रेमभंगाने अंतरंगात द्विधा झालेली देवयानी; स्वत:च्या सुखाच्यापलीकडे सहज पाहणारी आणि ययातिवर शरीरसुखाच्या, वासनातृप्तीच्या पलीकडच्या प्रेमाचा वर्षाव करणारी शर्मिष्ठा आणि निरपेक्ष प्रेम हाच ज्याचा स्वभावधर्म होऊन बसला आहे, असा विचारी, संयमी व ध्येयवादी कच या चार प्रमुख पात्रांमधील परस्परप्रेमाची विविध स्वरूपे या कादंबरीत समर्थपणे चित्रित झाली आहेत.
'ही कादंबरी ययातीची कामकथा आहे, देवयानीची संसारकथा आहे. शर्मिष्ठेची प्रेमकथा आहे आणि कचाची भक्तिगाथा आहे, हे लक्षात घेऊन वाचकांनी ती वाचावी,' अशी अपेक्षा स्वत: खांडेकरांनीच प्रकटपणे व्यक्त केली आहे.

Vishnu Sakharam Khandekar (Devanagari: विष्णु सखाराम खांडेकर) (11 January 1898 – 2 September 1976) (V. S. Sakharam Khandekar) was an eminent Marathi writer from Maharashtra, India. He was the first Marathilitterateur to win prestigious Jnanpith Award.[1][2][3]

EARLY LIFE[EDIT]

Khandekar was born in Sangli, Maharashtra. His father was a munsif in Sangli principality. In his early life, he was interested in acting in dramas and staged various dramas in his school days.

PROFESSIONAL AND LITERARY LIFE[EDIT]

In 1920, Khandekar started working as a school teacher in a small town, Shirode, in the present-day Sindhudurg district of the Konkan region in Maharashtra. He worked in that school until 1938. While working as a teacher, Khandekar produced in his spare time abundant Marathi literature in various forms. In his lifetime, he wrote sixteen novels, six plays, around 250 short stories, 50 allegorical stories, 100 essays, and over 200 critiques.[4] He worked and founded Khandekari alankar in Marathi grammar.[citation needed]

HONORS AND AWARDS[EDIT]

In 1941, Khandekar was elected as the president of the annual Marathi Sahitya Sammelan (Marathi Literary Conference) in Solapur. In 1968, the Government of India honoured him with a Padma Bhushan award in recognition of his literary accomplishments.[5] Two years later, he was also honoured with the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship of the Indian Sahitya Akademi. in 1974, he was awarded Jnanpith Award, country's highest literary recognition, for his novel Yayati.[2][3] Shivaji University at Kolhapur, Maharashtra conferred on him an honorary degree of D.Litt. In 1998, the Government of India issued a commemorative postage stamp in his honour.

Khandekar's novel Yayāti (ययाति) received three prestigious awards: A Maharashtra State Award (1960), a Sahitya Akademi Award (1960), and a Jnanpith Award (1974).[2][4]
